Rubens Barrichello said it was a 'great effort' from his Williams team after the Brazilian claimed his second successive top-five finish at the British Grand Prix.

Having achieved a season's best fourth at the European Grand Prix, Barrichello continued his newfound form with a fine drive to fifth at Silverstone.

"It was a good race today," said Barrichello. "It started well on the opening lap and I managed to claim some positions without too much trouble. Around the stops and the safety car, we gained a position from Alonso and lost one to Jenson, but overall we were in a safe position to come home in fifth.

"It is a great effort from the team to achieve a top five finish two races in a row - not so much in absolute results, but the direction of improvement."

Despite his encouraging back-to-back results, Barrichello remains mindful the team needs to continue to push hard to get the Williams name back where it belongs.

"The team is still not quite where it belongs, but we are quite happy with our performance today. We will continue to think and work positively and continue our forward progress."

Barrichello, who will notch up 300 grand prix starts this season, also revealed he may well stay on for another season at Williams.

"I have not signed any contract [for 2011] but I am not in any talks with other teams," Barrichello told Motorsport Aktuell. "Leaving Williams would be exactly the wrong thing, because they are already working on the programme for next year. It would be a waste not to be here.

"I want to be back on the podium with this team this year, and next year I want to be winning races."

Team-mate Nico Hulkenberg rounded off a positive home outing for the Grove based team by finishing tenth to give Williams its first double points finish of the season.

"All in all that was a positive race," said Hulkenberg. "It's a shame I lost places at the start though and going down the Hangar Straight Petrov just managed to overtake me round the outside.

"That, combined with not being able to get past Michael at the end, meant tenth for me today. A long first stint on the option tyre was the right strategy call and a good effort by the team."

Michael Schumacher confessed himself unhappy with his British Grand Prix after he finished ninth while team-mate Nico Rosberg drove to the podium.

"Again a race which I am not really happy about today," said Schumacher. "It was OK and seeing Nico on the podium is good for the team but my race was obviously less rewarding. I was in traffic for most of the race and did not really have a clear track.

"After the pit stop where I had to push really hard to make it in front of Rubens, I unfortunately made a mistake out of a slow corner which put me off the track. That cost me a lot of time plus two positions and that was it for today. We now look towards Hockenheim where we obviously will do everything to perform in the best possible way."

Schumacher also revealed he is hoping to race a new W01 chassis as soon as possible in order to rectify his handling issues.

"I was hoping to get a new chassis at Hockenheim as I have been driving the current one for a long time," Schumacher told German Sky television. "But it [the new car] will probably only be ready for Spa."

Team Ross Brawn did confirm that a latest update package for the W01 car will be ready in time for the German Grand Prix.

"There are a few changes, but as we have seen with McLaren, it's not easy when you can't test," said Brawn. "We will try the changes on Friday [at Hockenheim] and hope that they will work."

Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel shake hands after the race © Sutton Images

Christian Horner has promised to have sit-down talks with Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel after the relationship within the Red Bull team soured over the British Grand Prix weekend.

On Saturday the team appeared to favour Vettel by giving him the last remaining updated front wing and forcing Webber to use a lower-spec version. Vettel took pole but Webber went on to win the race and on the team radio afterwards said: "Not bad for a No. 2 driver". And in a post-race interview he added: "Yesterday I wasn't happy, clearly, and I am sure we will have some pretty decent chats".

Horner confirmed that the team would indeed sit down and talk about the decisions made over the course of the weekend.

"As a team member, he [Webber] is an important part of the team and he has delivered his bit - as every other individual has today," Horner said. "Of course we will talk about it. If the air needs to be cleared, it will be cleared. But, he has been around long enough to know that as a sportsman difficult decisions have to be made."

Horner said that Webber would get preference if a similar situation arises at the German Grand Prix, as the Australian is now leading Vettel in the championship. He also moved to play down Webber's comments over the team radio.

"Mark is king of the one liners - as we all know," he said. "I think the biggest thing today is that he has won the British Grand Prix and I am more than happy with his drive. It is a throw-away comment by Mark - who has just won the British GP. I don't take that comment with any malice behind it. He was upset about the decision yesterday, and I can only imagine that he was disappointed he didn't get the wing yesterday. But I can't cut it in half."

Horner was also confident that Webber would come round to his way of thinking in the cold light of day.

"Well, Mark has not signed a contract as a number two driver," he said. "He knows the lengths that the team has gone to, with the weight difference between the two drivers, to try and achieve parity. He knows how much we have done to support him. I have no doubt that when he has a chance to reflect on this - yes, lessons can be learned. But looking objectively at it - he as a sportsman will recognise that sometimes difficult decisions have to be made."

He added: "Mark has a contract with us for the future. We've provided him with a car that has enabled him to run at the front, win grands prix and challenge for the world championship. I doubt very much that he is going to be walk away from that."

Mark Webber stands on his car to celebrate victory © Press Association

Mark Webber - 1st: After all the in-fighting at Red Bull on Saturday, Webber put together the perfect response on Sunday with a faultless drive. His start was sublime and then he monitored the gap to Hamilton with ease to take a comfortable victory. His - and much of the paddock's - thoughts were summed up perfectly after the race when he came over the radio saying: "Not bad for a No. 2 driver".

Lewis Hamilton - 2nd: It was a brilliant weekend in front of his home fans and he got the absolute maximum from a car that was clearly not at its best. He gave Webber something to think about on the opening lap, but from that point onwards the Red Bull had the upper hand and he had to resign himself to second.

Nico Rosberg - 3rd: The best possible result given the car he had and another weekend where he showed up team-mate Schumacher. A good start was vital but the team also nailed his strategy by allowing him to stay out on track on the soft tyres. He did well to keep Alonso at bay early on and then hold off Button towards the end.

Jenson Button - 4th: A brilliant drive to gain ten positions, as he made the most of others mistakes. On his opening lap he took six positions and then leapfrogged others in the pits by staying out on soft tyres. There was also a healthy dose of luck involved as Alonso and Kubica encountered problems, but it didn't take away from a fine performance. Now he has to remedy his qualifying problems to stand a chance of staying in the fight for the championship.

Rubens Barrichello - 5th: He made the most of his vast experience at Silverstone to stay out of trouble and score a brilliant result for the team at its home grand prix. The car was quick all weekend and things look promising for Williams as we enter the second half of the season.

Kamui Kobayashi - 6th: Another driver who benefitted from a good start and then kept out of trouble for the rest of the race. Just like in Valencia, he proved that he can lap quickly and consistently, and the result is yet another boost for the resurgent Sauber team.

Sebastian Vettel - 7th: Arguably the drive of the day; the only mistake he made was misjudging the clutch's biting point off the line. Unfortunately it cost him dear and robbed the fans of a fantastic and heated battle between the Red Bulls and Hamilton. However, he still provided plenty of entertainment by storming through the field, making the most of the Red Bull's advantage in Silverstone's fast corners.

Adrian Sutil - 8th: He was the one driver who gave Vettel a hard time and it was only with considerable force that the Red Bull managed to get past. It was a good result given the team's qualifying performance and an impressive sixth consecutive points-scoring finish.

Michael Schumacher - 9th: A mistake after his early pit-stop cost him two positions and ultimately put an end to his chances of getting a decent result. He never looked like making a passing move on the cars in front and lost position to Vettel a tad too easily given Rosberg's performance further up the field in an identical car.

Nico Hulkenberg - 10th: He ran as high as third but that was only because he was late making a pit stop. However, the unconventional strategy did pay off and gave him a chance to attack Schumacher. Unfortunately he never managed to get close enough for a proper attempt, but will be happy to pick up his second point of the season.

Tonio Liuzzi - 11th: His five-place grid penalty cost him dear and meant that he had to overtake the backmarkers before he could even think about making a challenge on the points-paying positions. Despite that, he did well and on the softer tyre held off the advances of Alonso and got within a second of Hulkenberg at the end of the race.

Sebastian Vettel limps back to the pits © Press Association Sebastien Buemi - 12th: He fell behind Liuzzi after his first pit stop, and despite looking like he had the potential to pass, couldn't make a move stick. With a bit more luck he could have challenged for the points but 12th was probably representative of his pace this weekend.

Vitaly Petrov - 13th: Was able to capitalise on the first-lap mess and gained three places, but hopes of a points finish were scuppered by a puncture after the safety-car period

Fernando Alonso - 14th: Made a slow start from third, collided with Massa on the first corner, incurred a drive-through penalty later on when taking a short-cut to overtake Kubica, and the emergence of the safety car allowed the field to condense so when he returned he had no chance of points. He fumed for the rest of the race, even refusing to talk to his own pit crew

Felipe Massa - 15th: A wretched day which involved an first-lap puncture courtesy of Alonso and then a self-inflicted spin. Never up with the pace

Jarno Trulli - 16th: By his own admission a solid performance rather than anything more, but again was at the front of the newcomers

Heikki Kovalainen - 17th: A decent start but then a poor pit stop - so much so his team apologised to him - dropped him behind the Virgin. He clawed back that spot and with it ensured both Lotuses finished at the front of the new teams.

Timo Glock - 18th:Recovered from a poor start and but for a late error - oversteer - he would probably have beaten Kovalainen

Karun Chandhok - 19th: His two aims today were to finish and avoid being beaten by his new team-mate. He achieved both and would have been well ahead of Yamamoto had he not run over some debris late on

Sakon Yamamoto - 20th: Proved those who said his fitness after two years out would let him down wrong and did well to finish, but never looked likely to overtake anyone in what was a race within a race within a race

Jaime Alguersuari - DNF: Learning all the time but his lack of knowledge of tracks still causes problems. Nevertheless, he looked comfortable before suffering brake failure seven laps from the end

Pedro de la Rosa - DNF: An unlucky day. He was pushed wide in the first-corner melee and lost places, fought back but was then rear-ended by Adrian Sutil on the 26th lap which ended his afternoon

Robert Kubica - DNF: A good start but then struggled for grip and speed, was involved in the overtaking incident with Alonso and finally retired with driveshaft failure

Lucas di Grasse - DNF: Nine uneventful laps and then the all-too-familiar hydraulics problems ended his race

Kamui Kobayashi was worth just US,300 per point for his Sauber team at Silverstone © Sutton Images

With his second giant-beating performance in a row, Kamui Kobayashi was the best value-for-money driver at Silverstone, costing his Sauber team just US$3,300 per point he scored in the race.

The figure is calculated by the Formula Money ROI Review, based on Kobayashi's estimated salary of US$500,000 for the whole season and the eight points he scored from his sixth place finish ahead of big names such as Sebastian Vettel, Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso. In the value rankings he edged out Force India's Adrian Sutil, who cost his team US$6,600 per point he scored.

Kobayashi's Sauber team also performed well. The team spent an estimated US$470,000 overall for each point it scored at the British Grand Prix, making it the third best-value team of the race. However, it couldn't match the performance of closely-matched Red Bull Racing and McLaren, who respectively spent an estimated $350,000 and $370,000 per point they scored. Regardless, it was a very good result for a team which for the early part of the season had gone home empty-handed.

A puncture put an end to Sebastian Vettel's chances of victory © Press Association

Sebastian Vettel said it was a "shame" he couldn't fight his Red Bull team-mate Mark Webber at the British Grand Prix, after he suffered a puncture coming out of the first corner.

Vettel started from pole but was beaten into the first corner by Webber and then contact with Lewis Hamilton punctured his right-rear tyre. Friction between the two Red Bull drivers erupted yesterday when Vettel was given a front-wing update over Webber, but Vettel's puncture meant the pair were not able to fight it out during Sunday's race.

"From my point of view he [Webber] had a better start, so obviously I moved to the right trying to defend but he was already there - I knew that because I could see him in the mirror, I knew he didn't stall," he said. "Then he was there so there was no point in doing something stupid. The race is longer than just one corner. It's a shame I couldn't fight him then, but it's good for the team. I'm happy for the team."

Vettel put his start down to a sticking clutch and too much wheelspin.

"I think we were a little bit out of the window with the clutch," he added. "I had a bad start, lots of wheelspin, so I lost the immediate pull-away. I think we tried probably a bit too hard, but that's life - you try hard to get the optimum."

"Into turn one obviously I had to let Mark past and then I don't know if - I didn't feel anything - people said that Lewis touched me. As I said, I didn't feel anything," Vettel added. "Probably he achieved this time what he [Hamilton] didn't achieve in Valencia. Surely it wasn't his intention to give me a puncture, if it was like that [contact with Hamilton], but with a puncture early on in the race it's a big minus. I had to come back slowly to the pits. Then I was on the same set of tyres for the rest of the race. Fortunately the safety car came out so I had a bit of entertaining the last couple of laps."

Vettel went on to recover to seventh place while Webber took victory. When asked about Webber's comments after the race that his performance was "not bad for a No. 2 driver", Vettel made clear that the relationship between the two drivers had deteriorated.

"Well, I obviously focus on myself and sort of see, I guess - especially after what happened in the past," he said. "People have different opinions, I have my opinion, I have made my experiences, sometimes good and bad, and you get to know people probably a bit better and see their true faces. I think I learned my lesson, and I focus on myself."

Fernando Alonso moves ahead of Robert Kubica after cutting the corner at Club © Getty Images

Formula One's race director Charlie Whiting has revealed that he told Ferrari three times to let Robert Kubica back through after Fernando Alonso illegally overtook him at the British Grand Prix.

Alonso passed Kubica for position by cutting Club corner at Silverstone and then was subsequently penalised with a drive-through penalty for not letting the Renault back past. The punishment, considered too harsh by Ferrari, ruined Alonso's chances of fighting for points and it was widely assumed that the orders from the FIA were slow, with Ferrari's website stating it is "fact that in the fastest sport in the world, decision are taken slowly".

However, Whiting has hit back at Ferrari by saying he told the pit wall immediately that Alonso should concede position and in the end had no option but to get the stewards involved.

"On the radio, I suggested to them that if they exchange position again, there would be no need for the stewards to intervene," he told Italy's Autosprint magazine. "We told Ferrari three times that in my opinion they should give the position back to Kubica.

"And we told them that immediately, right after the overtaking manoeuvre. But they didn't do that and on the third communication they said that Kubica was by then too far back to let him regain the position."

Team boss Stefano Domenicali said on Monday that Ferrari needed to wait for the FIA's final decision about whether Alonso should give back the place, "otherwise we would be accused of being not aggressive enough".

Nico Rosberg said it was hard to keep Fernando Alonso behind early in the race © Press Association

Nico Rosberg believes his podium at the British Grand Prix was proof Mercedes had bounced back from its disastrous weekend two weeks ago in Valencia.

The car's update for the European Grand Prix backfired and the team only scored one point after both drivers qualified outside the top ten for the first time this season. Rosberg said Mercedes had turned around its problems and that there was still more to come from the car.

"Mark and Lewis were very fast in front, no way to keep up, but we have made such a great step forward from Valencia," said Rosberg. "It was such a disastrous weekend, we analysed where we went wrong. And we're on the podium, nearly out of merit apart from Sebastian [Vettel's puncture], I guess. And we can make more because things like the F-duct aren't working properly on our car."

Rosberg said his car had been damaged when he made contact with Jaime Alguersuari's Toro Rosso through Brooklands, but was glad it held together to keep Jenson Button's McLaren at bay.

"I am sure it did [get damaged], but it was still good enough to hold Jenson behind which is great," said Rosberg. "Jenson was close, but a bit more easy to keep him behind than [Fernando] Alonso - he is not able to follow as close, so having the Ferrari behind would have been a bit more difficult."

Lewis Hamilton beat Sebastian Vettel into the first corner but couldn't pass Mark Webber © Getty Images

Lewis Hamilton admitted he had no response to Mark Webber's pace at the British Grand Prix but said McLaren could be very proud of its performance.

Hamilton got a great start to beat Sebastian Vettel into the first corner and put some pressure on Webber before dropping back. He eventually finished five seconds behind Webber, but the gap could have been more had it not been for a safety car midway through the race.

"The Red Bulls, and Mark, did a phenomenal job," Hamilton admitted. "Those guys are so fast due to pure pace, I wouldn't be able to out-pace them. In the first couple of laps it looked like he was struggling, and I thought I had a chance to get past, but we both struggled. No chance though, I was flat chat but he was edging away."

He said that his podium finish was what the team deserved, after a hard weekend preparing the car when its blown diffuser upgrade backfired on Friday.

"I don't think it is a miracle result, it is a result of all the hard work, a reflection of all the hard work the team put in," said Hamilton. "It was nice to drive, not as fast as the guys ahead of us, but we did best job we could with the package we had, and even Jenson [Button] did a great job today. I guess we are still leading constructors' so it is a great result for the guys."

Vitaly Petrov is proving worthy of his Renault drive © Getty Images

Vitaly Petrov made another strong effort towards saving his career as a Renault driver in Hungary with his fifth place making him the best value for money driver of the race.

The Russian is a pay driver who contributes an estimated $15m to Renault's annual budget in return for his drive, which made him the only driver in Hungary who scored points at no cost to his team. His nearest rival, Nico Hulkenberg, cost Williams $3,300 per point he scored in the race.

In terms of team value for money, Red Bull Racing was the best-performing team, spending $270,000 for each point it scored in the race where Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel finished first and second. The second best performing team was Sauber, which spent $470,000 per point as it got both cars in the top ten for the first time this season.

A pumped-up Mark Webber celebrates after his victory © Press Association

Mark Webber put his disappointment of Saturday behind him with a barnstorming performance to win the British Grand Prix, dominating from the moment he beat team-mate Sebastian Vettel into the first corner. The gap between him and second-place Lewis Hamilton was five seconds, but had it not been for a safety-car period it would have been far bigger.

In trying to ensure Hamilton did not pass him, Vettel touched wheels with the McLaren in the first corner and headed off with damage to his rear wheel. He battled back through the field to finish seventh.

Behind Webber, who reeled off a succession of fastest laps, Lewis Hamilton exceeded his expectations by taking second, while Jenson Button produced if anything a better drive in taking fourth after starting in 14th and yesterday describing his car as "undriveable".

Nico Rosberg separated the McLarens in taking the third podium spot, keeping out of trouble from start to finish after a good getaway from the grid. Rubens Barrichello impressed to finish fifth for Williams at its home race, ahead of an equally heartening performance by Kamui Kobayashi in the Sauber.

Vettel's drive through the field to seventh was impressive and required bold overtaking manoeuvres on Adrian Sutil, Michael Schumacher and Nico Hulkenberg among others. He was undoubtedly helped by the safety car bunching up the pack, but did very well to manage a set of hard tyres for the entire race. Sutil finished eighth ahead of Schumacher, who again struggled and fell back down the field after a good start.

Not for the first time Fernando Alonso was left fuming after stewards hit him with a controversial drive-through penalty for cutting a corner when passing Robert Kubica. The Ferrari team were then told that Alonso had to let the Renault back through but by that time Kubica had retired with a seized differential. As a result the stewards decided the best course of action was to issue Alonso with a penalty, but the situation was made several times worse for the Spaniard when the safety car came out and bunched up the pack behind him. As a result, when he came into the pits to serve his punishment he dropped down to 15th and out of contention for points.

He then started a spirited drive back through the field, but even that was cut short when Tonio Liuzzi tagged his left-rear tyre as he passed him and punctured it. Felipe Massa in the other Ferrari also had a terrible race, after contact with Alonso at the start shredded his right-rear tyre. He made some progress back through the field but a spin 12 laps from the end forced him to pit again for tyres and meant he finished the race 15th. As if to prove a point, Alonso set the fastest lap of the race on his last lap.

Behind Massa, the two Lotuses finished a lap down but ahead of Timo Glock in the Virgin and the two HRTs of Karun Chandhok and Sakon Yamamoto. Among the DNFs, Pedro de la Rosa retired with disintegrating rear bodywork (which caused the safety car), Jaime Alguersuari beached his Toro Rosso in the gravel at Luffield and Lucas di Grassi retired with a mechanical problem.

Lewis Hamilton celebrates second place at his home race © Press Association Fernando Alonso - 14th
"I made a horrible start - we had some problems with the clutch - and then came the incident with Kubica which further affected my race. I do not wish to comment on the stewards' decision. The team acted correctly but the instruction to hand back the position arrived when I had already passed another driver and in the meantime, Kubica was visibly slowing down before retiring. On top of that, the penalty coincided with the safety car and so, rather than just losing a couple of positions, I lost around a dozen. Even with my difficult start, I am convinced I could have finished third, but instead I go home with nothing. The championship situation is definitely looking more difficult, but we have only just gone past the halfway point of the season and anything can still happen. The car is better and I was flying when I had a clear track ahead of me: we must continue to work and believe in ourselves."

Felipe Massa - 15th
"I don't know what to do, but I have to find some way of getting rid of the bad luck that is following me around! In the last few races, everything has happened to me. Today my race was soon over, when I touched with Fernando and got a puncture which dropped me to the back of the pack. The car was going well, but that's not much use if you cannot get a result. The championship is not over after this race, but clearly my situation is compromised: I would need to win a lot of races while others run into the same difficulties that have come my way in recent races. However, we must not give up: we will keep our heads high and continue to push on the development of the car and then see what results come our way."

Stefano Domenicali
"We seem to be really cursed at the moment, when everything that could go wrong, does. We are not happy, but we must not feel sorry for ourselves. Instead, we have to react calmly, remaining focussed and continuing to work in the way we did over the past few weeks. We go home with no points, but with the knowledge that we have a potential, in terms of the car, the team and the drivers, that is up to the right level to deal with the situation. We must not allow ourselves to give in to frustration: I am sure that the results and the points that have been lacking for so many reasons recently, will come. Clearly, the championship situation is looking complicated but we remain convinced we can still fight for the title. We will continue to push on the development of the F10, confident in our chances to make up the ground we have lost up until today."

Adrian Sutil - 8th
"It was fun and quite an interesting race. We started on the hard tyre as we wanted to try a long stint at the start but it was not really possible as the tyres didn't behave well at the beginning. I didn't have enough grip on the car so we came in to do an early stop and go on the soft tyre, so really the opposite strategy to everyone else. It worked well although the last ten laps were tough. But we managed it and there were some really good fights with Schumacher and then Vettel. It was good racing and I defended my position well against Vettel until the final lap, but then he just seemed to drive into me and I lost the racing line and had to move over. Otherwise I don't think he would have got past me. All the same eighth position was a good result in the end, it's more points and it keeps that momentum going. I'm really looking forward to my home Grand Prix in Germany next."

Tonio Liuzzi - 11th
I really enjoyed the second part of the race. We need to understand what happened in the first part of the race as with the hard tyres we had unbelievable understeer. I couldn't cope with the high speed corners and was really struggling to keep positions and a strong pace. We have to work it out as on the softer tyres we were performing very well and finished just a few hundredths from the points. Definitely without this issue we could have been in the points so we'll look at it and understand. We also still have an issue with the speed in the race but it was a great race overall and I always pushed 100% as you never know what can happen at the end.

Dr Vijay Mallya, chairman and team principal
I'm really proud of both drivers here today - both demonstrated great racing acumen to keep positions. It also gave us some great television! In both situations - Adrian with Sebastian and Tonio with Fernando - it would have been very easy for them to buckle, but they really did us proud and so nearly produced another double points finish. The pace of the car is clearly there and with more updates scheduled for the next race we can be very optimistic for the second half of the season. Our next focus now has to be getting the whole weekend together on both cars, but in terms of finishes and results we are where we should be at this point in the season.

Karun Chandhok - 19th
"The race was pretty much as we expected to be honest. We weren't really in a position to race with others so I pushed early on to open about 15 seconds gap to Sakon. After the pit stop, I ran over some debris which damaged the barge board and the side pod on my car costing downforce. So after the safety car it was all about just managing the damage and the gap to Sakon. Another double finish for the team and that's about all we can expect at the moment."

Sakon Yamamoto - 20th
"I am very happy that the team achieved its target, another two car finish. It was a good experience for me to race in Formula 1 again. I could improve all over the weekend and got a better feeling for the car. I want to thank the team for giving me the chance to race here in Silverstone. I could show that I am prepared to be back in the cockpit and whenever I'll get the opportunity to race again, I will take it. I also want to thank my fans who always supported me over the years. It was a very special and exciting weekend for me."

Dr Colin Kolles, team principal
"We are very happy with the result as today we could finish with two cars for the fourth time this season. Karun Chandhok and Sakon Yamamoto started on option tyres into the race as we found out that this tyre compound was the best for a long run. Our pit stop was quite late and we changed on prime tyres. Sakon showed a good performance during the race after being back in a Formula 1 car for many years. All in all, we had a trouble free race and I want to thank the team for doing a great job the whole weekend."

Jarno Trulli - 16th
"I finished the Grand Prix and managed to fight with the other teams after a pretty difficult weekend, so I'm very happy. It's just great for the whole team as they worked really hard with some difficult problems, but the work paid off. My pace felt very good, especially when you consider that I didn't have a chance to work on any set up changes, and I had to get used to the new section of the track in qualifying and during the first part of the race, so I think we all did a pretty good job!"

Heikki Kovalainen - 17th
"I think my pace was good all the way through the race, but there was constant traffic in front of me. I lost my position on the first lap, which was frustrating, as I then got held up quite a bit. I don't mind being a lap down, but it's just a shame I couldn't really push. Overall I'm very pleased that we managed to finish where we did and it has been a good day for the team here at Silverstone."

Mike Gascoyne, Chief Technical Officer
"Today's been good - a strong two car finish is a great return on the all the hard work that's been put in, so well done to the whole team for that, and once again we're best of the news teams. Apologies to Heikki as we had a problem in his pitstop which dropped him behind the Virgin, but he drove a great race in the second half and managed to regain his place. Jarno had a very solid race to make sure we had a two-car finish and keep ourselves best of the new teams. The only negative was the safety car which came at the wrong time for us, because we'd just pitted and it meant we dropped a lap down. But other than that it was a good strong Sunday, so well done to everyone in the team."

Lewis Hamilton - 2nd
"It's been a phenomenal weekend - and this result is a near-perfect way to finish it. I'm so happy: considering how far behind we were in practice, we really didn't expect to be this far up today. I'm very proud of the team and the effort they put in, as always. At the start, I was able to jump Fernando [Alonso] and take a step forward. After that I chased Mark [Webber] for the whole race, but the Red Bull was about four or five tenths a lap faster than our car, so it was very difficult to stay close to him. Still, the most important thing is that we scored a lot of world championship points once again, so this is another great race result for us. It's been the biggest turnout I've ever seen here. And the support from all the fans has been incredible, I couldn't ask for more. You can't hear them cheering their support in the car, but you can feel it; and I carry every single one of them with me in the car. They give me a huge boost of confidence on every lap. We've got two weeks to work on our upgrades before the next grand prix. I won the last race at Hockenheim, in 2008, and if we can get the new floor there, we should be looking pretty strong. We've just got to keep pushing: this world championship is still all to play for."

Jenson Button - 4th
"That was a great race, and I'm so happy to have made up 10 places. But it's hard to overtake around here, so I knew I had to make up a lot of places off the start-line. In the event I made up six places, but I then had to push really hard on the Option tyre in the first stint. That strategy worked for us and I came out behind Fernando, who had a drive-through, so I picked up fourth. It's a pity I couldn't have overtaken Nico [Rosberg], but this is still a fantastic result for me. It's a pity I couldn't get onto the podium in front of my home crowd, who have been absolutely amazing all weekend. You can never forget the fans around here - I genuinely think they helped Lewis and me to a good result today. And they got to see and cheer Lewis on the podium too, so it's not been a bad weekend for them overall, I hope. After Friday, to pick up second and fourth today is great. I'm still second in the drivers' championship, and the only pain is that Lewis has pulled away a bit. But we'll try and get that back at the next race. I reckon we'll turn up at Hockenheim with a stronger car, and that therefore we won't be fighting from the start of the weekend. I hope we'll have a good race there and can really take the fight to the Red Bulls."

Martin Whitmarsh - Team Principal
"Well, what can I say?! Both our drivers drove fantastic races under serious pressure, and the result was 30 valuable points to add to our constructors' world championship kitty. Lewis made a superb start and thereafter kept the pace up all afternoon. He drove brilliantly - in fact I don't think you'll see many better second places than that all season. Jenson, too, drove a masterly race to make up 10 places - from 14th at the start to fourth at the finish - and the team got all the strategy calls right for him. In fact, the team's efforts over the whole weekend have been exemplary. I've said it before, but the team is operating more cohesively than ever before, whether we've been working late into the night to prepare the cars, or Gary putting in additional time in the simulator on Friday night to ensure we began Saturday in as competitive a proposition as possible. It's that effort and dedication that has kept us in the lead of both world championships. So, well done, boys. Yes, although we didn't win the 2010 British Grand Prix, today is a good day. We saw an excellent afternoon's racing on a wonderful racetrack - and we leave Silverstone with our lead in the constructors' world championship intact, and with Lewis and Jenson still in first and second places in the drivers' world championship. In the past four grands prix we've scored 149 points out of a possible 172 - a stupendous achievement that speaks volumes for the tenacious determination of all at McLaren Mercedes."

Nico Rosberg - 3rd
"I had a good start today and was happy to be up to fourth place by the end of the first lap. Robert was holding me up and with Fernando pushing hard behind, it wasn't easy to maintain the place. Our strategy was really strong today so thanks to the guys on the pit wall for their efforts and keeping me out on the options. I had a great lap and with the quick pit stop, it was enough to get me out ahead of Robert, and that made the podium possible. It's been a good effort from the team to turn our situation around after Valencia. We have made a step forward and analysed where we went wrong and to come away with a podium today is fantastic. It's a real turnaround and I am confident that there is more to come from us."

Michael Schumacher - 9th
"Again a race which I am not really happy about today. It was OK and seeing Nico on the podium is good for the team but my race was obviously less rewarding. I was in traffic for most of the race and did not really have a clear track. After the pit stop where I had to push really hard to make it in front of Rubens, I unfortunately made a mistake out of a slow corner which put me off the track. That cost me a lot of time plus two positions and that was it for today. We now look towards Hockenheim where we obviously will do everything to perform in the best possible way."

Ross Brawn
"That was a very good performance from Nico and the team today. Nico had a great race and we got the maximum out of the car with a strong start, good strategy and impressive driving. Nico pushed as hard as he needed to and produced some great laps at the crucial time so his race went perfectly. Michael also had a good start and his position was looking interesting. We made an early pit stop to put him in fresh air, as he told us the guys around him were holding him up, but unfortunately he made a mistake and lost the advantage that we were gaining from the early stop. When the others made their stops, they were out in front of him, and with some damage to the car, that was really his race. Overall we've done a respectable job this weekend and now we just have to find some more pace. We're all looking forward to going back to the factory this evening with the trophy to see our team and their families."

Mark Webber -1st
"It's great to win here in Silverstone; it's got such a lot of history and to win big races like this one and Monaco is so rewarding. The start was ideal, when I got to the first corner I was ahead and thought, 'let's get on with it'. It was a special day and a lot of hard work has gone in from the team - you don't get results at this level if you're not putting the effort in. They deserve this today. Yesterday was a unique situation, but I'm confident we can sort everything for the future. Going forward, I will do the best I can. It was an incredible day today and I'm looking forward to enjoying myself this evening."

Sebastian Vettel - 7th
"I had a bad start, we went too aggressive with the clutch and I had quite a lot of wheel-spin. Then I had the puncture, I didn't feel anything, so I wasn't sure what happened. After the first turn, something was strange and I saw the rear-right puncture. Unfortunately after I got it, I got a bit of damage to the car which lost me some performance, but I was able to recover and score some points, which was important. For the first thirty laps, I didn't have much to do except going around trying to catch up, but after the safety car I had some people to fight and that was good fun, I was racing people like Felipe and Michael - it's great as whenever you try something and you see a gap you know that they are smart enough to see it, so it was good fun for the last twenty laps. It's always a good race here with a great atmosphere."

Christain Horner, team principal
"It's fantastic to win in front of all the team members today. Mark drove an excellent race, he made a very good start and the team was fantastic in the pit stops - it was a flawless performance from him. Sebastian was unlucky at the first corner, I'm not sure if contact was made with Hamilton at the start, but thereafter he made an excellent recovery drive to score some important points for the team. It was unlucky to have got the puncture, but it was a good recovery thereafter. The most important thing today is winning this race in front of all the people that work so hard to make the team what it is."

Robert Kubica - DNF - Driveshaft
"I had a dream first lap, gaining a lot of places, but after that our pace was not so good and I was lacking overall grip. Following my pit stop I had a nice fight with Alonso, but he overtook me by cutting turn eight. I was on the inside, he was on the outside and he passed me with all four wheels off the track. The team informed me that he would have to give back the position, but before he could do that we had a driveshaft failure at the rear of the car, so all I could do was bring it back to the pits and retire."

Vitaly Petrov - 13th
"Today I think it was possible to finish in the points, but I had some bad luck with a puncture after the safety-car period which cost me a lot of time. My start was not too bad, and I made up three positions on the first lap. After then, though, it was really difficult to overtake because there are no slow corners at this circuit, but I tried my best. It's good to have finished the race because it gives us lots of data and gives me more experience of the track."

Eric Boullier, Team Principal
"Robert had an exceptional start to the race, but unfortunately this was to be the only enjoyable moment of the day. It's disappointing to see him retire, but the car has been extremely reliable this year and this is his first retirement of the season. As for Vitaly, his race pace was good today, but he picked up a puncture and that ruined his race. We now have to bounce back and find more speed because we struggled for overall pace this weekend. We also saw today how close the fight is with Mercedes and we need to work hard to get back ahead of them."

Kamui Kobayashi - 6th
"I'm really happy, but actually I don't have much to tell. I had a very good start from 12th, the team did a great pit stop and the race pace today was as good as I thought it would be. I was pretty confident before the race because I can really feel how the car is getting better and better now. I had no chance to overtake anybody this time, but I still enjoyed the race. I didn't find it especially hard, I didn't even sweat."

Pedro de la Rosa - DNF - Bodywork
"Naturally I'm very disappointed. The car was quite good. I had some understeer, but nothing major. Right after the start I was racing alongside Rubens Barrichello and he pushed me wide in turn one. That was where I lost two places and dropped back to 11th. But I was still racing for points when Adrian Sutil hit me from behind at half distance of the race because not everybody in front of me had stopped by then. Unfortunately the damage proved to be too bad to continue."

Peter Sauber, Team Principal
"This was another strong and successful race for Kamui. But the difference to the recent Grand Prix in Valencia is this time he had to withstand a lot of pressure over the entire race distance. There was never a real gap ahead or behind him. He managed this tight situation very well and I think he could have gone even faster. My compliments not only to him and his driving, but also to the team which is improving the car step by step. Pedro had a very unlucky race. Right after the start he was pushed off by somebody, but he still had a good chance for points before the incident with Adrian Sutil on lap 26."

Sebastien Buemi - 12th
"It did not go well for me today. In terms of our strategy, after my tyre change, I came out behind Liuzzi who had not pitted, so I spent around ten laps behind him, using my front tyres a lot and when the safety car went in, I had a lot of graining on my front left tyre. By the time that cleared up, I was able to put in some good lap times, but by then it was too late to do much. I am disappointed because I think one point might have been possible today, so we did not do a good job."

Jaime Alguersuari - Spun off
"Of course I am disappointed not to have finished, but I was quite happy with my race up to that point, because the pace was there, I felt comfortable with the car and was getting faster as the race progressed. The team did a perfect job with my pit stop strategy. As usual, I suffer a bit at tracks I have not driven before, having to learn them from Friday to Saturday, but from Hungary onwards, I will have had that experience from last season, which will make life easier."

Franz Tost
"At the end of the first lap, Sebastien came round in 11th place, which looked quite encouraging, but then he dropped down the order. We decided to call him in for his pit stop a bit earlier than planned, as his lap times were not so good. After this, he then found himself stuck behind Liuzzi for several laps. The fact that he set the eighth-fastest lap time in the race shows the potential of the car. As for Jaime, he drove a good race up until the moment when he had a brake problem with seven laps to go and had to retire. We will now investigate the cause of this failure. It was a shame for him, as, towards the end of the race, he had the pace to close on Hulkenberg. In two weeks time we go to Hockenheim, where we must try and do better."

Timo Glock - 18th
"I had a bad start again and lost position against Jarno and Heikki. In the race I tried to stay with the Lotus, which pulled away slightly. When Heikki went in to the pits I had two really good laps and came in to the pits. The boys did a really good pit stop which brought me out in front of Heikki. Then I was following Jarno and I tried to keep up with him but I had a really big oversteer moment over a bump and nearly lost the car. Heikki then overtook me and so I finished behind the Lotus. On a positive note the pace was good and I was fairly happy with the car."

Lucas di Grassi - DNF - Hydraulics
"We didn't have a very good day. The car was good at the start but then we lost hydraulic pressure which ended my race. I am obviously disappointed but on a positive note, the car is showing great progress and I am looking forward to the next race."

Nick Wirth, Technical Director:
"A mixed result today. We have clearly made a good step forward in performance and had a race-long battle with the Lotus cars. This was somewhat spoiled when Timo lost ground to Heikki in the yellow-flag section caused by Alguersuari's off, which allowed Heikki to get in Timo's slipstream and eventually pass. Lucas has fallen victim to another hydraulic gremlin, just when he was in the thick of the action, and we will address this for Hockenheim. But the progress is clear and our battles, finishing position and fastest race laps show how tight things are now. We know that every bit of performance counts, so we'll be looking to bring more updates to Hockenheim and the races beyond, with great confidence that they will translate into yet more speed."

Rubens Barrichello - 5th:
"It was a good race today. It started well on the opening lap and I managed to claim some positions without too much trouble. Around the stops and the safety car, we gained a position from Alonso and lost one to Jenson, but overall we were in a safe position to come home in fifth. It is a great effort from the team to achieve a top five finish two races in a row - not so much in absolute results, but the direction of improvement. The team is still not quite where it belongs, but we are quite happy with our performance today. We will continue to think and work positively and continue our forward progress."

Nico Hulkenberg - 10th:
"All-in-all that was a positive race. It's a shame I lost places at the start though and going down the Hangar Straight Petrov just managed to overtake me round the outside. That, combined with not being able to get past Michael at the end, meant tenth for me today. A long first stint on the option tyre was the right strategy call and a good effort by the team."

Sam Michael, Technical Director:
"Both drivers in the points today is another good result for the team. Rubens had a great first lap and embedded himself into a points-paying position. Nico did an excellent job in his first stint, following a different strategy and staying out on his set of options for as long as possible. All of the aero upgrades worked well on both cars, which shows the factory is making good progress. We now need to maintain that progress."

Adrian Sutil was not happy about Sebastian Vettel's passing manoeuvre © Sutton Images

Adrian Sutil was left fuming at Sebastian Vettel after the pair made contact during an overtaking manoeuvre towards the end of the British Grand Prix.

Vettel, who was recovering from a puncture at the start of the race, put Sutil under pressure for several laps before making contact with the Force India as he overtook for seventh place. Vettel had been considerably faster through the high-speed Abbey, but Sutil held his line in the following Village corner and was then hit by Vettel on the entry to The Loop.

"I had some good battles today but the last one was not fair," Sutil said. "Sebastian pushed me off the track and I lost seventh place. It's annoying. I don't think that's the way you have to pass with a car that is two seconds faster."

Vettel responded: "It was definitely not intentional and I don't think it hurt him too much. I don't think there's much more to say about it."

Sutil recently had a dig at Vettel after the Canadian Grand Prix, when he mockingly described his fellow German as a "superstar" following a post-race dispute. Sutil said that Vettel had sarcastically asked him if his rear-view mirrors had fallen off during the race.

Jenson Button gives a thumbs-up to the crowd © Sutton Images

Jenson Button said his fourth-place finish was as good as he could have hoped for after a challenging weekend at the British Grand Prix.

Button struggled to find a balance in his car all weekend and McLaren faced a major setback when it abandoned its plans to run its blown diffuser update on Friday. As a result he qualified 14th, but on Sunday gained six places at the start of the race and then went on to make up another four over the course of the race.

"After Friday, to pick up second and fourth today is great," he said. "I'm still second in the drivers' championship, and the only pain is that Lewis has pulled away a bit. But we'll try and get that back at the next race. I reckon we'll turn up at Hockenheim with a stronger car, and that therefore we won't be fighting from the start of the weekend. I hope we'll have a good race there and can really take the fight to the Red Bulls."

He admitted that a strong strategy and other drivers' problems had allowed him to progress through the field.

"That was a great race, and I'm so happy to have made up 10 places," he added. "But it's hard to overtake around here, so I knew I had to make up a lot of places off the start-line. It's a pity I couldn't get onto the podium in front of my home crowd, who have been absolutely amazing all weekend."

Fell the chill ... Mark Webber is congratulated by Sebastian Vettel © Sutton Images

As delighted as he was with his win at Silverstone, Mark Webber was clearly still far from happy with his team after weekend which ends with major concerns over the relationship between him and Sebastian Vettel.

Webber could not resist a dig at his team as he crossed the line- "Not bad for a No. 2" - and in front of photographers he and Vettel later exchange the briefest of handshakes.

Hopes the victory would have calmed him down were clearly overoptimistic as he told the BBC he "would never have signed a contract for next year if I believed that was the way going forward".

"I was disappointed. We will see how it goes in the future, I will keep doing what I am doing and I hope it is enough. I've had a few hurdles in my career, sometimes privately as well, so I think you can judge a person's character by how they come back from adversity. Some drivers have that, I've had a bit more than others.

"It can work but obviously it is not how long is a piece of string. You have to make sure it is not constantly happening because it can test you too much but if the balance is right it can put some fuel on the fire."

He said the team would sit down once the dust had settled and talk things through. "Yesterday I wasn't happy, clearly, and I am sure we will have some pretty decent chats. Today went well for me and that's it."

As for the decision to give Vettel the wing yesterday, he said it should not have happened. "I wasn't massively in favour of [it] but that is the way it goes sometimes. Some of the drivers offered me front wings on the parade lap from their cars but I said stick with what I've got. Seb didn't."

Mark Webber now leads Sebastian Vettel in the championship © Press Association

Red Bull boss Christian Horner has revealed that Mark Webber will now get preference within the team at the German Grand Prix, after moving ahead of Sebastian Vettel in the drivers' championship with a win at Silverstone.

In qualifying for the British Grand Prix on Saturday, Vettel was given a front wing update over Webber and took pole position. Horner said the decision to give the only remaining wing to Vettel had been made because he was higher in the championship and performed better with the update during practice.

However, Webber was clearly upset about the decision and on his victorious slow-down lap after winning Sunday's race said over the team radio: "Not bad for a No. 2 driver".

"Mark is now ahead in the points, so we will act differently at the next race," Horner told the BBC. "We have a great team result at this race and sometimes difficult team decisions have to be made. There is very little difference between them and as a team we try to give them the same components but this weekend we couldn't because of an incident. But we will continue trying to catch the McLarens.

He added: "Mark is pushing very hard but sometimes you just have to make very difficult team decisions. We won the race and we should just be really happy about it."

Mark Webber is now seven points ahead of Vettel and 17 behind championship leader Lewis Hamilton.

Mark Sutton's picture of the week, brought to you by GP Week © Sutton Images

I went over to Silverstone early in the week so I had a good chance to have a look around the new layout before the start of the race. It was a chance to get a tour round the new track and have a look at where the holes were in the fencing for photographers.

I saw the new pit complex, which is coming on very well and has a new pit lane exit that crests over a hill - that could be a bit controversial when it's being used in F1 next year. But from the photographer's point of view the track is pretty boring to be honest.

The problem is that we are shooting from so far away that we get heat haze from the track and that blurs the images. So in a way we prefer the old track because there were a couple of opportunities around there to get close to the cars. But it seems as though most the drivers prefer the new track and I suppose it gave us a bit more overtaking.

The good news is that they keep investing money into the circuit and it keeps turning an annual profit. The race is still very popular and the attendance figure for the weekend was 305,000 over three days.

305,000 fans turned up over three days at Silverstone © Sutton Images That's actually down 5,000 on 2009 but I think that's only because everybody thought it was going to be the last race at Silverstone last year. Probably the most impressive figure was the 85,000 they had on Friday, because that proves people from the UK are really dedicated and enjoy their three-day pass.

But because it's such a big venue it doesn't always feel like there are that many people there. If you go to Old Trafford to watch Manchester United there are 76,000 people there and it's obvious because they are all in such a small space. But despite being spread out, the fans still create a magnificent atmosphere - I've never seen so many McLaren hats in one place in my life.

People in England really spend their money on F1 and I think increasingly they go to the grand prix almost as a holiday. That's what my parents used to do when I was younger, the beginning of our holiday was always the British Grand Prix and then we'd go off in the Ford Cortina camping. That was what got me so interested as a kid.

Billie 'the Piper' Hill showing his support for McLaren © Sutton Images But one of the fans from this weekend stands out more than most. He's known as Billy the Piper and goes to a lot of the grands prix with a megaphone and a shiny McLaren hard hat. I was on my way back from the Santander stand, where we had a raffle going on for Great Ormond Street, when I met him for the first time.

In total I think I met him three times over the weekend and even on my way back from the first corner at the end of the race he was there at the fence, I couldn't get away from him. Mind you he said he'd only had three beers, so he was quite sober.

Back over in the paddock there was the usual dose of celebrities, although most of them only turned up on the Sunday. We got a great shot on the grid of Sir Stirling Moss, Bernie Ecclestone, Jean Todt and Frankie Dettori - all the same height, about 5 foot 1 inch, it was very funny.

Frankie Dettori, Sir Stirling Moss, Jean Todt and Bernie Ecclestone pose for a photo © Sutton Images But the grid is manic. It's one of those races, a bit like Monaco, where everywhere you look there's another picture and in the end you miss so much because you can't do it all on your own. We had two photographers on the grid but if you want to catch every moment you need about five people.

The best thing is when you get someone who is at a grand prix for the first time. I was walking around with darts player James Wade and he was absolutely gobsmacked being guided around the Force India garage, he just kept shaking his head in amazement. There was one point when a mechanic working on the gearbox of the car asked him to throw a dart-shaped cylinder into a bin on the other side of the room and he nailed it first time.

But of course the big story of the weekend was down at Red Bull. I knew from the practice sessions that something was going on because they kept swapping the wings on the car as they came into the pits to do back-to-back comparisons. So I thought that was quite interesting and decided to keep an eye on it, but of course I had no idea how big an issue it would become.

Spot Seb: Vettel stays out of the limelight during the celebrations © Sutton Images By the time qualifying finished everybody knew what was going on, so before the race I stationed myself on pole position and got a picture of Vettel coming onto the grid with a close up of the wing. It was a good move because those pictures have been used quite extensively in the aftermath.

After the race the relationship between the two was still very cold and during all the champagne spraying they didn't spend much time together. Usually they sit together for the big celebration shot, but on this one Vettel was right at the side and towards the back. It was very unlike Red Bull at any other race this season.

But we'll just have to wait and see what the relationship is like when we arrive in Germany, it should make for some interesting photos...
