Nico Rosberg said it was hard to keep Fernando Alonso behind early in the race © Press Association

Nico Rosberg believes his podium at the British Grand Prix was proof Mercedes had bounced back from its disastrous weekend two weeks ago in Valencia.

The car's update for the European Grand Prix backfired and the team only scored one point after both drivers qualified outside the top ten for the first time this season. Rosberg said Mercedes had turned around its problems and that there was still more to come from the car.

"Mark and Lewis were very fast in front, no way to keep up, but we have made such a great step forward from Valencia," said Rosberg. "It was such a disastrous weekend, we analysed where we went wrong. And we're on the podium, nearly out of merit apart from Sebastian [Vettel's puncture], I guess. And we can make more because things like the F-duct aren't working properly on our car."

Rosberg said his car had been damaged when he made contact with Jaime Alguersuari's Toro Rosso through Brooklands, but was glad it held together to keep Jenson Button's McLaren at bay.

"I am sure it did [get damaged], but it was still good enough to hold Jenson behind which is great," said Rosberg. "Jenson was close, but a bit more easy to keep him behind than [Fernando] Alonso - he is not able to follow as close, so having the Ferrari behind would have been a bit more difficult."
