Been dreaming of an electric Hummer? Here you go
Over the years, there have been attempts to green up one of the world's most iconic gas guzzlers, from the fanciful to the conceptual to the ER-EV. Now, a car customizer across the pond is epitomizing this ultimate dichotomy by building a battery-electric Hummer.
Prindiville, which so far has specialized in revamping vehicles from Bentley, BMW, Ferrari, Porsche and, of course, Range Rover with carbon-fiber body parts, aerodynamic paneling, souped-up engines and other goodies, says its plug-in Hummers will be the UK's first customized EVs.
Granted, the "Hummer" in question appears to be a substantially shrunken version of the original, Ahnold-favored super SUV. Prindiville says the Hummer EV, which will first be made in a trial batch of 25 vehicles, will have a 60-mile single-charge range. And the car can be yours for about 25,000 British pounds, just under $40,000 U.S. at today's exchange rates. Plus, it's exempt from London's congestion charge. Constructed on an intelligent lightweight chassis, the new compact model will debut with a luxury Limited Edition series of 25 individually numbered vehicles, prior to the introduction of a full manufacturing programme. This will allow customers to enjoy an extensive array of options, paint colours, and finishes, subject to the vehicle's dedicated use.
Linked to a two-speed transmission, the in-built 72V drive system features a fully integrated AC Brushless Motor powered by a lithium-iron phosphate battery pack for fast acceleration and a range of up to 60 miles (97 kilometres) on a full charge. The high level of specification also counts fully adjustable four-wheel front and rear suspension to promote enhanced ride comfort, as well as adaptive rear drums and hydraulic front disc brakes.
The head-turning white-metallic exterior of the Limited Edition Prindiville Electric Hummer boasts carbon fibre detailing across the front hood storage compartment and flared wheel arches, which are flanked by the familiar chrome louver grille, steel plates, matt black window surrounds, and 15 or 18-inch alloy wheels. Added safety comes courtesy of lockable double-skinned driver and passenger doors, and injection moulded LED front headlamps and rear taillights to provide superior luminosity.
The signature Prindiville styling is evident across the equally luxurious and spacious interior which reveals heated sports seats lined with alcantara and an elegant white trim (available as a two or four-seat configuration). This is complemented by an LCD digital dash display indicating remaining battery power and speed amongst other key system functions, a twin cup holder, in addition to a Pioneer™ CD radio and MP3 in-car entertainment system complete with a slimline remote control. Just like its larger sibling, the exquisite attention to detail can also be seen down to the Prindiville-branded doorsill plates and floor mats. Supplementary lockable storage can be accessed through the tailgate.
