The hit crime drama reaches its gripping climax in the final episode

More than 8 million viewers are expected to tune in tonight as the hit ITV crime drama reaches its gripping climax.

Welsh actor Matthew Gravelle, 38, said his “heart was racing” as the verdict was read out.

He said producers also tried to make it more intense by keeping him in a “glass box” for most of the series and shooting two different endings.

The second series of Broadchurch, starring David Tennant and Olivia Colman, has seen Miller on trial for the murder of schoolboy Danny Latimer.

My heart was racing. I felt like I really was on trial

Gravelle, who plays Colman’s on-screen husband, said: “It was a strange experience for me because I was kept away from the other actors for the first scenes, but I then found out I was keeping myself away from people quite a bit.”

He said: “It worked well because it increased the tension but when we finally filmed the verdict scenes, and the actor playing the court clerk said ‘Do you find the defendant Joseph Michael Miller guilty or not guilty?’ my heart was racing. I felt like I really was on trial.”

Producers of the West Country show went to great lengths to keep tonight’s outcome a secret.

Gravelle said: “We filmed both a guilty and a not guilty verdict, so it was interesting to experience both and see the different reactions.”

The actor added other cast members made sure he was not too isolated during filming.

He said: “I think the other cast felt a bit sorry for me because they were all together and I was in my glass box, they kept me entertained by passing notes and we got quite good at lip-reading and mime.”

The first series ended with Miller admitting to the murder, and Gravelle said he had to be good at keeping the outcome secret again.

He said: “It was a relief when we finally filmed the verdict scenes, but of course I have had to keep it a secret until now. I’m good at secrets though.”
