EU: William Hague has promised an all-embracing 'audit' of the EU's effects on this country's laws and institutions EU: William Hague has promised an all-embracing 'audit' of the EU's effects on this country's laws and institutions

The campaign by  the Conservative party's high command to pretend that they are doing something to protect Britain against the ever encroaching power of the European Union to rob this country of its independence and liberty and sink us into an undemocratic European superstate is  now in full swing.

Following Dave's latest unconvincing cast-iron assurance that he will...might..jolly well could.. be persuaded to hold a referendum, sometime in the next millennium, on as yet unspecified re-negotiated terms of  British EU membership, Foreign Secretary William Hague has chipped in to promise an all-embracing 'audit' of the EU's effects on this country's laws and institutions. ( As if we didn't know that already).

Since this  exercise will be conducted by Hague's own Foreign Office - a weasel's nest of EU lickspittles who greeted the passing of the Lisbon Treaty with a rousing cheer - its promised independence is more than open to question.

And since it won't be reporting back until 2014 at the earliest, its clear that our lords and masters in Westminster don't regard the burning question of Europe as urgent or vital.

One thing, and one thing only  has prompted this sudden flurry of fake activity by the Europhile clique currently running the Tories: the relentless rise of UKIP.

Does anyone seriously suppose that Cameron and Hague would be mounting this 'audit' and going through the motions of fake Euroscepticism without the pressure of Nigel Farage's party breathing down their necks?

UKIP's intervention at the last General Election, and Cameron's contemptuous and insulting description of their members as 'Fruit-cakes and racists' is reckoned by many analysts to have cost the Tories the chance of winning a majority, and thus landed us with the broken-backed Coalitoon with the Euro-fanatic Lib Dems that currently misrules us.

In 2014 - when  Hague's auditors are due to report back - UKIP look likely to sweep the board in the elections to the European Parliament - the EU's dummy talking shop which nods through Brussels decrees - beating the Tories to become the largest British party in that assembly.

This will put them in pole position to deny  the Tories a majority again at the General Election due in 2015, especially if the Liberal Democrats carry out their threat to block the Boundary Commission's reform of constituencies that might have won the Tories 20 extra seats.

UKIP: The relentless rise of UKIP is behind a sudden flurry of EU activity by the coalition government UKIP: The relentless rise of UKIP is behind a sudden flurry of EU activity by the coalition government

So there are excellent reasons  for top Tories to take fright at the march of Farage's army, lift their vow of Omerta on the subject and start 'banging on about Europe' with a vengeance.

I doubt, however, whether it will do them much good. People resent being lied to and taken for fools. and the political Establishment - especially the Tories - have a consistently dreadful record of deceit on the issue.

It was the Tories who first tried to get Britain into what was then the Common Market way back in 1963 - until France's President De Gaulle vetoed our application. Ten years later Edward Heath, the same man who had led that failed bid, succeeded as Prime Minister in creeping under the wire, betraying a whole host of Britain's vital national interests - from fishing to the iniquitous Common Agricultural Policy - in order to do so.

In 1975, Heath led the 'Yes' campaign that approved Britain's membership, shamelessly lying that 'no essential sovereignity' would be lost by our joining 'the club'. Even Heath's successor as Tory leader, Margaret Thatcher, while fighting a rearguard losing battle to win back soime concessiuons from the ever hungry European Leviathan, was unable to protect us from the monster's ever tightening grip, signing up to the Single European Act - another inexorable step towards the construction of a superstate.

Hapless John Major trod the same dismal path, disastrously joining that forerunner of the Euro, the European Monetasry System - and then very expensively exiting it - and signing up to the Maastricht Treaty, yet another brick in the wall of the superstate prison.

David Cameron, of course, is cut from the same Europhile cloth. He may not wear a wristwatch or a wedding ring, but he used to sport cufflinks bearing the hated EU logo - thus literally wearing his heart on his sleeve, and revealing where his true loyalty lay.

Britain's long and ultimately catastrophic engasgement with the European project amounts to a betrayal of  our history and our interests by a political class - represented by all three major parties but most shamefully by the Conservatives, the natural guardians of those interests - and Hague's little audit is yet another attempt to kick the tainted Euro can further down the road.

It will not work because, as Abraham Lincoln observed, you cannot fool all the people all the time and in throwing dust in our eyes over Europe our so called 'elite' have been fooling us for far too long.
